Apart from the Trappist beers, chocolate, waffles, and fries, how much do you really know about Belgium? I was quite surprised to learn that there is an intricate cave system that runs throughout the country. The Cave of Han, located on the outskirts of the village Han-sur-Lesse, is an extraordinary underground experience that is worth checking out. Although the entrance to the caves may seem a bit touristy, once you step into the grotto the experience is quite authentic.
Upon arrival in Han-sur-Lesse, find the long line-up that will lead you to the sales office. Don’t worry, that’s about as touristy as it gets. Oh, apart from the vintage tram that you must board, that chugs along a track through a wilderness park for 2km, to bring you to the entrance of the cave. (It’s the only way to get to access The Cave of Han.)
Tours are offered in French, Dutch and English. It’s honestly not a big deal if you end up taking a tour in a language you do not speak, as it will give you more time to hang back and come up with your own narrative. The stalagmites and stalactites form stunning sculptures. Ribbons of calcified limestone decorate the interior like a giant curtain. They have also done a fantastic job with the ambient lighting. The entire walk takes just under 2 hours. Bring a sweater as the caves are about 13 degrees Celsius- even on the warmest summer days. I’ll leave the end of the tour as a surprise for you and also recommend that you visit the Rochefort Trappist brewery close by to end off on a cultural note 🙂
